A series of murals were commissioned by the Long Beach Redeveloment Agency and the Wrigley Village community for 3 traffic light boxes along Pacific Avenue. The designs were taken from the street banners along Pacific, an earlier public art project.
Model studies was undertaken to determine how to place the existing street banner designs (cropped in various ways) on the boxes to achieve the best 3D composition and show variation. The designs facing Pacific are the community’s favorites.
The challenging aspect of implementing this project included the existing box conditions (thick peeling paint); the sites (traffic corner intersections with high pedestrian / high-toxic-exhaust traffic); the heat of an LA summer; long distances to water / power outlets; gang tags / presence; the obsessive exactitude of the designs (not originally intended as murals); and the colorful conversations initiated by passersby or people shouting from their car (part of the street psychologist aspect of the job): “Good job.... Are you getting paid to do this?... Beautiful... Where can my daughter go to art school?... EU monarchy is taking over the world... I’m on parole, can’t leave the country... Do you have permission for this?... Where can my husband apply?... Would you like a peach?... I have AIDS... That is so tight.”
