.play hand/dodge-ball murals

Murals at Kester Elementary in Van Nuys, CA (16’ wide x 12’ tall) to motivate kids to play sports! The paintings had to incorporate the horizontal half-line and the three lower boxes that were already there.

The original designs, referencing the history of the handball sport and the Olympics, were simplified upon the school’s request. The handballs were also changed to dodgeballs as the kids play a mixture of the sports.

Design, drawing, paint colors, second paint coat, adjusting shapes, linework: Ioana Urma. First pass filling in the shapes with designated paint colors: UCLA students.

This was a volunteer project through L.A. Works.

As the kids love the colorful surfaces, they play on them quite a lot, and if you go there you will see two very dirty walls!
